The Manchester United forward has enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2020, becoming a Premier League regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Mason Greenwood has been one of the real success stories of 2020. After breaking through under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019, the 19-year-old has continued on his upward trajectory at Manchester United.

Greenwood’s real breakthrough for United came at the end of 2019, with Solskjaer finally throwing him into the starting line-up. Following a goal in the Boxing Day win over Newcastle last year, Premier League legend Alan Shearer offered his take on where Greenwood would be at the end of 2020.

β€œThe early signs that we’ve seen of Mason Greenwood have been exceptional. I don’t think it’ll be long, give it 18 months or two years, until he’s a regular here with the way he’s started off,” he said to Amazon Prime Video.

β€œHe looks to be a natural goalscorer to me. Goalscoring doesn’t faze him, it’s what his game is all about.”

Perhaps Shearer was too conservative in his prediction for Greenwood, with the forward playing in all but three Premier League games in the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

Greenwood chipped in with another nine goals during that campaign and was a regular starter at the beginning of this term.

He also made his England debut in the 1-0 away win vs Iceland, showing his rapid rise from academy star to Premier League regular.

However, in recent weeks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept the 19-year-old on the bench, with Daniel James brought back into the fold. That’s a decision Red Devils legend Paul Scholes disagrees with, claiming he is a part of an unplayable front three.

“Leaving the best players out, I wasn’t really including Cavani in that,” he said after the draw with Leicester City.

“I know he’s a top centre-forward but he’s coming to the end, I was thinking more of Mason Greenwood. I know he didn’t come into the game but when those three start together, Greenwood, Martial and Rashford, with Fernandes in behind, I don’t think anyone can handle them.”
