Lionel Messi’s tribute to Diego Maradona last Sunday was just another of the many coincidences that link both legends together. In a similar way to Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego will forever remain linked to Messi until the end of times. However, the strange correlation between both Argentine players are coincidences above anything also.

Serendipitous coincidences that make us think twice before doubting about destiny or miracles. From the moment Leo started his international career, he never asked to be compared to Diego but destiny wanted it to be like this. We will talk about the Top 5 coincidences between both legends that make us think twice about a higher power.

5.- Their left foot.

Before Lionel Messi appeared, Diego Maradona had the most famous left foot in sports history. No other player compared to his skill until the FC Barcelona star was presented to the world. Today, Leo is the only one who deserves a comparison next to Maradona’s magical left foot. They both bend the ball in similar fashion and they pass it with the exact same precision, it’s eerily similar.

4.- Their Newell’s Old Boys connection.

Leo’s recent homage to Maradona has a backstory behind it that we just mentioned in an earlier article. The Bracelona captain has repeatedly stated his affection for Newell’s Old Boys when he was a child. For this reason alone, he obviously felt blessed for being able to watch him at the stadium live when he was 7 years old.

3.- The U-20 World Cup title.

Diego Maradona rose to international stardom during the summer of 1979, which was the year of the under 20 World Cup in Japan. Messi played the under 20 World Cup in 2005 and won the tournament like Maradona. This is when they both started to conquer the world from a very early age as global superstars.

2.- Their love for the Argentina National Team.

We all know how much Diego Maradona means to all Argentina supporters, he carried the weight of a country on his shoulders for many years. In Messi’s case, he hasn’t been as fortunate as Diego in regards to titles. But nobody can question Leo’s commitment and love for his national team. If he didn’t have this devotion for his country, all the harsh criticism would’ve scared him off a while ago.

1.- The similar goals they scored.

This is arguably the hardest to believe of all the coincidences between both legendary players. Last weekend’s homage against Osasuna was Messi’s third goal he scores which resembles one of Diego’s goals. Apart from Maradona’s two goals against England in the 1986 World Cup, Messi also scored a goal that is eerily similar to Diego’s only goal at Newell’s Old Boys. You can’t make this stuff up, it was written in the stars.
