Southampton – Wolves Southampton nearly caused an upset against Liverpool last weekend but a late double from the title challengers saw the Saints go home empty handed.
Of course, Saints fans are much more interested in happenings at the other end of the ladder. Coming into their final six games of the league campaign, Southampton find themselves just one position and five points clear of the bottom three.A poor run now could see them resigned to the second tier, although considering their recent form this does seem unlikely.
Southampton have won three of their last five Premier League matches, including a stunning win over Spurs back in March. Their only losses have been narrow ones against Manchester United and Liverpool, and they haven’t lost against a team outside the top six since the 9th February.
However, Wolves are a team on a mission. The newly promoted outfit were dumped out of the FA Cup at the hands of Watford last weekend, with The Hornets coming back from 2-0 down to win the game 3-2 in extra time. This can have a negative impact on them.
Now, Nuno Espirito Santo’s attentions turn towards the battle for 7th place. Depending on other domestic and continental cup results, 7th place could yield a ticket to next season’s Europa League, and Wolves are currently level on points with Leicester in this battle.
The visitors’ last league outing was another fantastic performance against the Premier League big boys, beating Manchester United 2-1 again to make it five wins, three draws, and two defeats from their last 10 league games.
Away from home it’s a different story though, where they have failed to win their last four games and have really struggled against the lesser teams in the division. MORE HERE
