The soccer world is in mourning and football greats have not been left behind in paying their tributes to the falled legend, Diego Maradona.
Maradona passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Buenos Aires. Messi, Ronaldo, Pele and Neymar have paid their tributes to the “hand of god architect”
Messi
Lionel Messi paid tribute to Diego Maradona following the Argentine’s death on Wednesday. Both Messi and Maradona are widely regarded as two of the best players of all time, and the Argentine duo are often compared to each other due to their similar playing styles.
Maradona also managed Messi with Argentina’s national team at the World Cup in 2010 but the team were unable to lift the trophy as they were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals.
“A very sad day for all Argentines and for football,”
Messi wrote on Instagram following the news of Maradona’s death.
“He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
Speaking in 2010, Messi hailed Maradona as the greatest of all time.
‘Even if I played for a million years, I’d never come close to Maradona,’ said the Barcelona legend. ‘Not that I’d want to anyway. He’s the greatest there’s ever been.’
Pele
The great Brazilian Pele, wrote on twitter:
“What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend. There is still much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to family members. One day, I hope we can play ball together in the sky.”
Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo described Diego Maradona as ‘an unparalleled magician’ following the news of the Argentine’s death.
And Ronaldo posted his moving tribute to one of the game’s greatest-ever players.
‘Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius,’
Ronaldo posted
‘One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. ‘He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. ‘Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten.’
Last year, Maradona had described Ronaldo as a ‘wizard’ after his hat-trick against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
‘There are players who have been touched by a magic wand. The truth is we Argentines are proud that Messi is Argentinian and that he didn’t go off with the Spanish [at international level]. The other one is an animal. Ronaldo is pure power, and now he’s also a wizard. He said he’d score three goals and he scored three goals.’
Neymar
Neymar posted on his instagram
“You will always be in our memories, you left your legacy. SOCCER thanks you 🙏🏽 Rest in peace legend.”
