Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal - Reds defeated on penalties in Community Shield again - Liverpool FC - This Is Anfield
  • Jurgen Klopp has said the handball looked like a clear penalty.
  • The Liverpool manager has also called out referee Andre Marriner for not recognizing the fouls on Mane.
  • Klopp has highlighted Man United’s penalties post-game as well.

“It looked like a clear penalty. I turned around to the 4th official and asked if it would be checked. He said: ‘We’ve checked it already, no pen’,” Klopp said to Sky Sports after the Southampton loss.

“What Andre Marriner did with Sadio Mane tonight, I’m not sure that’s okay. Man United had more penalties in two years than me in five and a half years…. but no excuses for tonight.”

Liverpool had an appeal for handball denied that should have been a clear penalty after Wijnaldum’s shot hit a Southampton player’s hand.
While the performance should have been better from the Reds, the refereeing was quite poor once again.
